[Careers, Training, Awards and Funding] Joseph Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience Rules and Regulations

  1. Purpose
      To commemorate the outstanding achievements in the field of developmental neuroscience by Dr. Joseph Altman, who discovered neurogenesis in the adult mammalian brain, the Joseph Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience (hereinafter “the Award”) recognizes young researchers who have made remarkable achievements and are expected to achieve further outcomes in the same field in the future.
  2. Scope of the Award
      The focus of the Award shall be research in developmental neuroscience at the tissue and cell levels. The scope of the Award is not limited to phenomena during fetal or developmental stages; it also includes adult neurogenesis and its biological significance and its changes resulting from aging or diseases. As a general rule, applied studies are not included within the scope of the Award.
  3. Selection of Recipient
    1) Candidates for the Award shall be invited through an annual open call, and nominated by the Joseph Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience Selection Committee (hereinafter “the Selection Committee”). 2) As a general rule, one candidate shall be selected as the recipient from among all of the candidates. 3) The selection of the recipient shall be carried out by the Selection Committee. The composition of the Selection Committee shall be stipulated in the Detailed Regulations of the Japan Neuroscience Society Joseph Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience Selection.
  4. Eligibility
      As a general rule, researchers will be eligible for the Award if they have received their doctoral degree within the past 20 years. (Recipients are not limited to members of the Japan Neuroscience Society (hereinafter “JNS”). Furthermore, the Award is intended not only for Japanese researchers but also for overseas researchers.)
  5. Selection Criteria
      The selection criteria to be evaluated for the Award shall be an article of which the applicant is a corresponding author and that was published within five years of the application deadline, and two other articles of which the applicant is a first or corresponding author (no restriction on publication year). A review paper is not considered an article and shall not be evaluated.
  6. Obligation of the Recipient
      The Award recipient is obligated to make a presentation at the JNS annual meeting held during the year he/she receives the Award (economy-class tickets and an accommodation fee shall be provided for the recipient if he/she is an overseas researcher and will fly to Japan.)
  7. Award
    The Award recipient shall be presented with the Joseph Altman Award in developmental Neuroscience (diploma of merit and prize money of 10,000 USD). Award Ceremony The Award recipient shall be recognized and presented with the prize money for research funding at the Annual Meeting of JNS.
Detailed Regulations of the Joseph Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience Selection
  1. Selection Committee
    1. 1) The Joseph Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience Selection Committee (hereinafter“the Selection Committee”) shall be comprised of six regular members (including the Chair of the Selection Committee) of JNS.
    2. 2) The Selection Committee can include, instead of regular JNS members, up to two qualified non-JNS members who do not reside in Japan.
    3. 3) The term of each Selection Committee member shall be four years.
    4. 4) Half of the Selection Committee members shall rotate every two years.
    5. 5) The Selection Committee Chair shall serve only one term. Once the term expires, the Chair shall retire from the Chair position as well as that of Selection Committee member.
    6. 6) The successor Chair shall be selected from among the continuing Selection Committee members.
    7. 7) The Chair and members of the Selection Committee shall be recommended by the President of JNS and require the approval of the JNS Board of Directors.
  2. Application
    1. 1) Applicants shall submit an application through JNS’s dedicated website for the Joseph Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience (hereinafter “the Award”).
    2. 2) Through the above website, applicants shall upload the following sets of documents: his/her articles (PDF) which are in accordance with “5. Selection Criteria” and an application form (download via website). Applicants may include an explanation of any periods of research suspension due to childbirth and child care.
    3. 3) The annual deadline for applications shall be January 31st.
(Supplementary Provision)
  In enforcing these regulations dated November 1, 2016, half of the Selection Committee members shall have a two year term with the remaining members having a four year term. In this case, the term of each Committee member shall be determined by the Chair of the Selection Committee.
