Postdoctoral Fellow or Ph.D. Graduate Student - Genetic Programs and Neural Circuit Development

The Kim Lab in the Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz is recruiting highly motivated researchers at the postdoctoral or Ph.D. graduate student level to join our collaborative and multidisciplinary team. These positions are supported by the NIH BRAIN Initiative and other R01 mechanisms.
Our research focuses on how molecular genetic programs drive the formation of precise neural circuits during mammalian brain development. We aim to understand how these developmental programs specify long-range connectivity and shape sensory processing and behavior.
We welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities, including those currently studying or working in Japan. The lab provides a supportive and internationally minded research environment, with individualized mentoring to help researchers grow as independent scientists.
Applicants interested in a Ph.D. position may be eligible for direct admission into our lab through UCSC’s graduate program in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology or related interdisciplinary programs. Candidates with strong academic backgrounds and research interests aligned with the lab are encouraged to reach out to inquire about this pathway.
To explore our research questions, we develop and apply an integrated set of advanced tools and approaches, including:
  • Next-generation trans-synaptic viral circuit tracing
Engineering novel viral vectors for cell- and circuit-specific labeling
    Single-cell genome-wide transcriptomics
In vivo imaging and circuit manipulation
    Mouse genetics and developmental models
UC Santa Cruz offers a stimulating academic environment with strong neuroscience, genomics, and developmental biology communities. For international researchers, UCSC provides dedicated support through the International Scholar and Student Services Office, which assists with relocation, visa procedures, and integration into the campus community.
Qualifications and Areas of Interest
  • Developmental biology and molecular genetics
    Single-cell omics and transcriptomics
    Viral vector engineering
    Neural circuit mapping and manipulation
In vivo imaging or systems neuroscience
