Faculty Position in research of brain science,
RIKEN Center for Brain Science(CBS)

The RIKEN Center for Brain Science (CBS) is Japan’s premier neuroscience research center. Taking advantage of the multidisciplinarity of the fields of medicine, biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematical sciences, and psychology, our aim is to advance basic research and develop innovative technologies for elucidating the functions of the brain and the mind at multiple levels from genes, molecules, cells and whole organisms to societal systems. We also aim at finding solutions to the issues which contemporary society confronts, e.g. how we grapple with the psychological ramifications of our own inventions such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, and how we seek solutions to conquer diseases such as depression and dementia. For details, please refer to the RIKEN CBS website. https://cbs.riken.jp/en/

Team Leader (Principal Investigator position); Approximately 3 persons (half or more will be women)
【Job description】
Since its foundation in April 2018 following the strong 20-year foundation of its predecessor, the Brain Science Institute (BSI), to achieve the main research goals as described below, CBS has continuously endeavored for setting up the state-of-art research environments such as by installation of 7T fMRI for the study of human brain. This year, we are looking for researchers as Team Leaders (principal investigators) who can make the best of this excellent research environment by collaborating closely with researchers inside and outside CBS with diverse expertise to comprehensively promote research on brain and mind across multiple levels. The new team leader will supervise the laboratory and work as a "research manager" to train and guide researchers and other staffs. We are seeking a broad range of applicants in the fields of brain science and related fields. In order to further promote the diversity of researchers, which is one of CBS's strengths, we will ensure that at least half of the new hires will be women.
Four major themes of CBS:
  1. Research to reveal the high-level cognitive functions of the human brain
Our goal is to decipher how we reflect on ourselves, make inferences, and predict what others are thinking.
  2. Multi-layered studies based on animal models By conducting research at all levels, we aim to underst
and the principles of brain functions and brain-body interactions.
  3. Data-driven research led by theoretical and technological advances
Ever larger and complex data acquired with advanced technologies can be harnessed to develop new theories and more universal and efficient AI systems.
  4. Developing diagnostic and therapeutic methods for neuropsychiatric disorders
We aim to address the social challenges of brain diseases and to create seeds for innovations that will enhance the quality of life.
