Post Doctorate fellowship in “Cognitive/social brain circuits
in Neurodevelopmental Disorders”

Supervisor: Francesco Papaleo (francesco.papaleo@iit.it)

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative candidate for a Post-Doctoral fellowship to join our “Genetics of Cognition” Research Line at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Neuroscience and Brain Technologies department.

Cognitive and social impairments represent one of the earlier, most impairing and incurable symptoms in neurodevelopmental disorders with a very high genetic component such as schizophrenia and autism. Despite this, the understanding of genetics and related brain mechanisms underlying these behavioral alterations are still very poor. The aim of this project is to evaluate how genetic variations (i.e. 22q11.2 and 16p11.2) might alter the developmental trajectories of brain circuits relevant to higher order cognitive abilities and social cognition. To achieve this goal, using genetically modified mice, we will employ a combined approach strictly linking behavioral outputs (from mice performing complex cognitive and social tasks) with circuit-level manipulations with in vivo chemo- and opto-genetics, in vivo miniscopes and fiberphotometry, and in vivo electrophysiology. Parallel studies in human patients will also be performed.

The candidate must have published at least a first-author paper and have a PhD. Excellent written and verbal English communication skills are required. Applicants are expected to have a strong research track record and to be independent.

Salary will be commensurate to qualifications and experience and in line with international standards.

Applications, including detailed Curriculum Vitae, a cover letter and name and contacts of 2 referees, has to be submitted in PDF format to francesco.papaleo@iit.it.

Deadline: August 30, 2019
