[About Us] About Us

The Japan Neuroscience Society (JNS) is an academic organization of scientists who study the brain and nervous system and wish to publish their findings in order to promote the welfare and culture of humans. The Society holds annual academic meetings to provide a place for society members to present their findings, exchange information, and establish new collaborations. The Society also publishes an academic journal in English, Neuroscience Research, to disseminate their research findings to the world.

“The Japan Neuroscience Association”, the predecessor of the JNS, was founded by about 70 members in April 1974 with the aim of promoting neuroscience research internationally as a member of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) as well as developing neuroscience research in Japan. In 1978, the Association held the first annual meeting; thereafter the annual meeting has grown to be a main scientific meeting in which most neuroscientists in Japan report their new findings and exchange information about their research. Since then, the Association has grown steadily. In 1991, when the number of the Association members reached about 1,500, the bylaws of the Association were modified so as to make it more open to young researchers, researchers in related fields, and the public. At the same time, the name of the Association was changed to “the Japan Neuroscience Society (JNS)”. The number of JNS members has been increasing year by year even after that, and the JNS was incorporated as “the Japanese Neuroscience Society, General Incorporated Association" in April 2023 to fulfill our social responsibility. The JNS, which has about 6,100 members, is now one of the leading academic organizations on neuroscience in Japan, where many brain- and neuro- science researchers gather.

The distinguishing features of neuroscience are that it covers an extremely broad range of academic disciplines such as molecular biology, cell biology, biophysics, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology to psychology, behavioral science, information science, technology, mathematics and clinical medicine. Moreover, neuroscience requires close collaboration and integration among these disciplines. From this viewpoint, the JNS aims to be an inclusive society that attracts a diverse range of researchers and students from Japan and abroad who are engaged in or aspiring to become involved in the field of neuroscience. In order to achieve this goal, the JNS is working daily on activities such as promotion of diversity, training of the next generation of researchers, international collaboration, industry-academia cooperation, raising awareness of appropriate brain-/neuro-scientific knowledge, and formulation of ethical guidelines related to neuroscience.
